Every year Google astonishes us by holding IO conference to aware developers and android community with what is going on and what next big thing they are going to roll out for world. This year also announcements in Google IO 2017 are amazing.
It was live streamed to over 400 events in 85 countries. About 2 billion active devices running android so let’s see Google IO 2017 highlights.


Machine Learning

Regarding ‘Mobile First to AI First’ mission at Google, CEO Sundar Pichai told that Google is applying AI and Machine Learning to all there products. Like recently, Gmail app got Smart Reply for over 1 billion users. And similarly he told regarding Google Home.

Similar to voice, Google has also enhanced vision to the next level like it can understand image. And is even less error prone in image recognition than human. with this improvements it is also required to redesign computational architecture to meet the needs like scale, speed etc.

 Next Generation TPUs

Google IO 17 TPU

“To give you a sense – each one of our machine translation models takes a training of over 3 billion words for a week on about 100 GPUs. So we have been working hard and I am really excited to announce our next generation of TPUs – “CLOUD TPUs”, Which are optimized for both Training and Inference.” Sunder Pichai is the place one should visit to know more about machine learning and AI.

While writing in Google search a query, you get suggestion. OrderDraw will give suggestion while drawing. It also comprises of benefits of machine learning.

Google Assistant


What is Google Assistant?

Just as google search simplified the web. And made it more useful for everyone, your Google Assistant simplifies all the technologies in your life. You should be able to just express what you want throughout your day and the right thing should happen. That’s what the Google Assistant is all about. It’s your own individual Google.-Scott Huffmn

As already it supports multiple languages, support for German, French, Brazilian Portuguese, and Japanese on both devices Android and iPhone is going to roll out, and hence multilingual.

One more thing is going to get added is support for assistance by typing in Google Assistant. So now no need to be heard in public while making conversation.

Google Assistant SDK will allow developers and manufacturers to integrate assistance into their devices for consumers easily.

Google Home


As everyone is aware of Google Home launched few months ago, and also received appropriate response from buyers in UK. Sunder Pichai told how initially it was planned to release with 8 microphones to detect the voice, but later with the help of Deep Learning technique known as Neural Beam Forming they were able to release it with only two microphones. It can now recognize up to six people. Below are the upcoming features announced in Google IO 2017 for Google Home.

  1. Support for proactive assistance coming to google home.(Reminders, traffic delays, flight status changes)
  2. Hands-free calling with Google Home (call any landline or mobile number in the US or canada completely free)
  3. Enhanced music services to Google Home
    • Spotify (And many additional entertainment partners added)
    • Bluetooth support (Play any audio on Google home from android or ios device)
  4. Visual Responses


Google Lens


Google Lens was one of the new releases announced at Google IO 17. It is the result of vision based computing research improvements Google is engaged in.

What is Google Lens?
Google lens is the set of vision based computing capability that can understand what you are looking at, and help you take action based on that information. We will ship it first in google assistant and photos and then it will come to other products.– Sunder Pichai

How does Google Lens work?
If you are glued at something, or you are unable to find what it is. Just tap Google Lens and point your phone at it, scan it,  and it will help you with the information available for that scanned thing. One best example given in Google IO 17 was like one thing we usually get hold of in daily life. When we go to our friend’s home and entering login credentials to connect with his/her Wi-Fi network. Instead we can use Google lens to scan it and rest of the work will be done by Google Lens.

Google Photos


Google Photos is ever growing in user base and features with 500 million monthly active users and 1.2 billion photos and videos uploaded per day worldwide.  Three  new features are going to roll out in Google Photos that shows how AI plays its role in Google Photos.

Suggested Sharing

This feature notifies which photos to share and in edition it will also suggest which people you should share with. The reminder could be via notification and also through newly introduced sharing tab at bottom in Google Photos. Using machine learning it can identify who is in the photo and that photo should be shared with whom.

Sharing tab gives you all the insights with logs of sharing Photos. At the top in sharing tab based on your sharing habits Google Photos gives you personal suggestions. It notifies to all of them who have not installed this app via email or SMS.

Those participants with whom these photos were shared are suggested to contribute in this album with photos in their device related to this event automatically.

Shared Library

This includes auto saving of photos from others library. e.g If Tom wants each and every photos Or selected ones from the album he took photos – to be in Jerry’s library, he can go for it. He can even choose time frame for this sharing. Jerry can opt to save specific photos or all photos from that album to be saved in his Google Photos from Tom.

Photo books (Free photo book for all i/o attendees)

You can have now your Photobook printed with just few clicks. Select your photos and choose Photobook, Machine Learning will suggest you which photos are best to go for. You can go for modification, and choose hardcover or softcover book, checkout and you are done.

With this Google Lens will also roll out later this year in Google photos.

YouTube Go

Google IO 17 YouTube Go

Sameer Samat (Vice President, Android and Play) announced regarding YouTube Go. YouTube Go is developed by YouTube team for the users with limited data. This will have a preview facility for before you watch video. It will show how much mobile data is going to be used based on video quality selection.

It will allow to save videos to watch offline and will allow to share video with other user with peer-to-peer sharing without consuming mobile data.
